Once you’ve brewed and enjoyed your daily cup of coffee, don’t throw out the leftover grounds – there’s a lot you can do with them.

5 Ways to Reuse Coffee Beans and Grounds

Most of us love a good cup of coffee. It tastes great, is chock full of antioxidants, is a great energy booster, and sharpens your mental focus. But before you toss out the leftover grounds from your most recent cup, remember that they can be used for household, beauty, and crafty purposes. Here are 5 ways to reuse coffee beans and grounds.

• Scent your Home. Place a vanilla scented tea candle into a glass bowl or jar filled with coffee beans. The heat from the candle will warm the beans, giving off a French vanilla coffee scent into your home.
• Diffuse Unpleasant Odors. This is especially useful for old pieces of furniture. If you’ve got an old trunk or armoire that still smells of moth balls, fill an old pillow case with coffee beans and place it inside of the trunk/cabinet/dresser. The beans will absorb the odor.
• Natural Dye. If you need to add a darker hue to a craft or project, steep coffee beans in water and use the liquid as a D.I.Y. wood stain, or use it to add color to fabric or paper for a rustic look. And this dye isn’t just for homemade projects: It works on hair, too! If you have dark hair, simply rub used coffee grounds into your hair and scalp during your normal shower routine and rinse out for a boost in color and shine.
• Exfoliator. Combining used coffee grounds with coconut oil and brown sugar make for a great exfoliator. Mix the three ingredients in a small bowl and rub onto wet skin. Rinse off in the shower, and enjoy softer, healthier, glowing skin.
• Boost and Protect your Garden. Used coffee grounds work wonders in the garden. Not only will they deter slugs, snails, and other unwanted bugs from harming your plants, but the used grounds are also a potent source of organic nutrients, which will boost plant growth.
