Why you shouldn't skip your monthly breast self-exam.
It’s no secret that breast self-examinations are extremely important, and although most women know it’s a process they should be doing, many women fail to realize the significance of at-home detection. According to Johns Hopkins Medical Center, 40% of diagnosed breast cancers are detected by women who feel a lump on their own, whether it’s by accident or during self-examinations. Moreover, it’s also important to be familiar with your body, especially when looking for irregularities. To find an irregularity, you first have to know what “regular” is for you. This process may seem a bit dramatic, or even somber, but it is an easy way to detect lumps and can be done from the comfort and privacy of your own home. Breast self-exams should be conducted at least once each month to ensure that there are no problems. Should you find any irregularities such as lumps, dimpling, rashes and swelling, or discharge from the nipples, contact your doctor or a health professional.
